Staff at one of the Gold Coast’s largest breweries have been evacuated and a worker hospitalised after inhaling a mystery substance.
The Carlton and United Brewries Yatala site remained shut at the time of writing since a handful of staff started experiencing symptoms and emergency services arrived about 7.30am on Thursday.
On arrival at the Cuthbert Drive business, paramedics assessed 25 staff members. A man had to be taken to Logan Hospital in a stable condition for further treatment.
At least six crews from Queensland Fire and Emergency Services were called to the brewery, including the specialist scientific unit. They still remained on scene several hours after the intial call-out to try and determine what the mystery substance is.
It’s suspected to be a gas leak.
A QFES spokeswomen said firefighters were conducting atmospheric testing while they waited for more specialised equipment to arrive. The Carlton and United Breweries site on the Northern Gold Coast employs more than 250 people and produces around 400 million litres of beer per year.
