Construction of a $1.3bn public hospital on the northern Gold Coast is one step closer, with new images finally revealing what it will look like and the features within it.

Gold Coast housing prices skyrocket

Construction of a $1.3bn public hospital on the northern Gold Coast is one step closer with one of Australia’s biggest builders appointed to break ground on the project.

Multiplex Constructions is expected to soon begin work of the Coomera project, with the state government releasing new images of the facility, which is currently in the design phase.

The 404-bed hospital will open to the public in late 2027.

Health Minister Shannon Fentiman said the development would be a key plank of Coomera’s continued growth.

“Queensland’s ‘big build’ is coming to Coomera and we know this hospital is absolutely critical for this evolving community,” she said.

“It’s fantastic to see the next step of this $1.3bn project underway.

“This project will deliver 404 new beds, including surgical, medical, ambulatory, subacute and mental health inpatient beds for residents of the Northern Gold Coast.”

The main public hospital building will be 13 storeys tall, with two clinical service buildings, a facility support centre and private hospital all to be part of the build.

The complex will have 2450 carparking spaces and, once fully operational, it will have room for up to 800 beds and 4000-4500 staff.

Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk: said the project would create thousands of construction jobs during the multi-year building process and many health positions once finished.

“This critical health care infrastructure will transform the Northern Gold Coast and give residents access to the services they need closer to home,” she said.

“The big build will also create 3100 local jobs during constructions, which is huge for the local economy.”

The hospital was announced in October 2020 just weeks out from that year’s state election as part of a $160m election commitment.

A preliminary business case was given $3m in funding in the 2021 state budget, with a six-year construction period stated, business case dependant.

The first funding for the project – $74m – was contained in June’s state budget.

Gold Coast based Housing Minister Meaghan Scanlon said the hospital would have surgical, medical, ambulatory, subacute, emergency and mental health treatment facilities.

The public complex will join the proposed $1bn Foxwell health precinct pitched by joint venture partners Keylin and Kinstone Group in mid-2022.

It will feature a $700m, 400-bed, 60,000sq m, state-of-the-art hospital, which will be built as part of the masterplan.
