A 73-STOREY supertower planned by one of Australia’s most famous developers is getting a new look.

The Ocean tower on The Esplanade in Surfers Paradise has been put forward by Meriton’s ‘high-rise’ Harry Triguboff, and is expected to begin construction soon, with a range of unexpected new features, including a retail precinct.

The tower was approved by the council earlier this year.

A new supermarket targeted at locals and tourists, multiple retail tenancies such as beauty salons and liquor stores, as well as two large restaurants will be included in the tower, which gained council approval in March.

A pool bar will also be built on the fifth level of the tower on top of the podium for the use of guests.

The changes were submitted to the Gold Coast City Council this week by Mr Triguboff’s company Karimbla Properties.

The move has been welcomed by council planning boss Cr Cameron Caldwell, who said the new facilities would help activate the area.

“It is great that a project like this is coming to fruition,” he said.

“It is entirely reasonable that some minor changes like this would be made close to construction beginning.

WHY THESE TOWERS GOT APPROVED
“This development will provide an attractive new lifestyle precinct to renew the northern part of Surfers Paradise.”

The tower will have 722 apartments, including 319 which will be operated by Meriton as serviced units.

Once completed it would be the fourth-tallest building on the Gold Coast behind the under-construction Spirit, Q1 and Soul.

SURFERS PARADISE’S GOLDEN SUPERTOWER

Ocean is planned for a 3833 sq m site on the Esplanade which Meriton group bought for $58 million last year.

The tower which formerly stood on the site has since been demolished.

According to documents filed with the council this week the changes will allow for the chance to “establish a high quality dining destination” in the area.
