THE battle for the Gold Coast mayoralty is gaining pace with a fourth candidate throwing their hat into the ring.
Gary Pead, who contested the state seat of Mermaid Beach at the January 31 state election for Labor, will challenge Tom Tate for the city’s top job.
Mr Pead, who failed to unseat Ray Stevens from the blue ribbon conservative seat joins Penny Toland, Jim Wilson and Cr Tate as candidates for the mayoralty.

In a letter to friends and media organisations, Mr Pead yesterday signalled his intention to campaign on environmental issues.
“I will shortly be announcing my candidacy for the Gold Coast Mayoral contest and all of the sustainability, economic transitions, and climate change issues will be at the forefront of my campaign,” he said.
“Hopefully we will get some exposure to the general public, the issues are too important to fail.”
Cr Tate was first to declare, putting his hand up for a second term less than three months after being elected in 2012.
Ms Toland, alsob a former ALP state candidate at the January election, announced she would run for mayor last month and was followed soon after by Mr Wilson.
