FIVE security staff were heavily fined for working illegally at Gold Coast venues at the weekend during a blitz by police and party bosses.
Fifty-nine security providers at 34 Glitter Strip venues were targeted in the crackdown.
The city-wide blitz was a joint operation between the Queensland Police Service, the Office of Liquor and Gaming and the Office of Fair Trading.
“There have been recent reports of patrons being mistreated by security personnel on the Gold Coast and we want to ensure patrons can enjoy a night out with friends safely,” Justice Minister Shannon Fentiman said.
“Security providers need to be properly trained. They must pass criminal history checks and meet strict probity requirements to be eligible for security licences.
“It is often a difficult role, and that is why only suitable, trained and licensed staff should be involved.”
A video taken at The Grand Hotel last month showing security pushing a man and woman down the stairs, causing nationwide outrage.
The man was also kicked in the stomach.
Hotel management has declined to comment since the video went viral online.
Strict penalties apply for venues caught with unlicensed security, facing more than $68,000 fines for a first offence and potential jail time on future offences.
Australian Security Industry Association Ltd CEO Bryan de Caires said: “Venues need to understand by engaging unlicensed and poorly trained security providers they are exposing their patrons and themselves to a level of risk that can have devastating consequences.”
