Mayor Tom Tate soars to new heights ahead of Pacific Gold Coast

Gold Coast Mayor Tom Tate has had a small taste of the aviation prowess going on display at the upcoming Pacific Gold Coast.

Clutching an empty sick bag proudly in his hand at the launch, he declared Gold Coasters will be in for an “adrenaline pumping” show this weekend.

On Wednesday, Mr Tate flew in the back seat of a Marchetti Jet piloted by former RAAF electronics engineer turned pilot Stephen Gayle.

During the flight go-pro footage caught Mr Tate letting out an f-bomb after shouting “what a view”.

The footage shows him gliding across the Coast and catching his breath after completing full circle spins.

“It felt like I just did a workout in the gym. So many G-forces,” the Mayor said.

“It was exceptional to do this in the city I love. Being mayor of the City of the Gold Coast has been never been boring. I’ve jumped off a plane with the Crown Prince of Dubai and now I’ve flown in a jet.

“The best part is you get to see the city. It was a spectacular view of the city I’m passionate about but to see it from a different angle, at that speed. It’s exhilarating.”

Mr Tate said after attending a Pacific event at Huntington Beach, California, in recent years he knew the Gold Coast had to have its own version.

However the airshow represents more than just a show of aerobatic skill, Mr Tate added, saying it also represented the strengthening of ties between the US and Australia.

He added that airshow boss Kevin Elliott “believed in the Gold Coast and he believed that we could get over all the paperwork. He believed in (Major Events Gold Coast’s boss) Jan McCormick’s tenacity that she can get the money out of the council and state.”

“And he also believed that the tie between two countries would blossom even further.”

The Pacific Gold Coast will kick off Friday and runs till Sunday afternoon.
