A MALTESE cross pup mauled by two german shepherds in a horrific attack at Hope Island last week is out of intensive care and showing signs of improvement after undergoing surgery.

Three-year-old April was left fighting for her life after the attack last Monday which left her in a critical condition with a vet bill of up to $20,000 facing the family.

April’s owner, Chris, has confirmed her family’s brave pet is still alive and showing signs of improvement.

“She walked a few steps yesterday when we visited,” she told the Bulletin.

“The vets have done a great job as no one thought she would make it this far.”

Last week the Hope Island mum told the Bulletin she would do “whatever it takes” to keep the family pet alive for the sake of Kyra, 8, and Cooper, 16, who lost their father to illness just 10 ten weeks earlier.

Chris thanked nurse Alyson Faulkner who intervened in the attack and took April to a nearby vet before having her own injuries treated.

“Thank goodness Alyson saved her as she is not wasting this opportunity to survive,” Chris said.

Ms Faulkner, who sustained bites and bruises to her hands, forearms and face, said her wounds had mostly healed but she was still traumatised and angry about the unregistered dogs that attacked April.

“The nightmares still play havoc with me. I try to distract myself and not think about it,” she said.

“I’m just staying focused on keeping updated about how little April’s progressing, she’s an amazing spirited little dog.”

The german shepherds, who were seized by animal management services after the owner surrendered them, have now been put down.

A spokeswoman from Gold Coast City Council confirmed that the dogs had been euthanized last Friday.
