The Coast Coast is on high alert for major flooding as a severe weather system moves south.

Evacuation orders have been issued for Tumbulgum and surrounding areas as “life threatening” floods hit the region.

The State Emergency Service of NSW ordered residents of Tumbulgum, between the M1 and the Tweed River, to immediately leave via the Terranora Road.

“Once floodwater passes 2m on the Tumbulgum Gauge, final access route from Tumbulgum will be closed,” the SES said.

Residents told to “leave now” can go to The Salvation Army Tweed Centre at the corner of Leisure Dr and Woodlands Dr, Banora Point.

The nearby border towns of Chinderah and Fingal Head have been issued an evacuation warning, telling residents to prepare for the likelihood they too may be ordered to leave.

Those issued an order to leave have been told to turn off the electricity and gas at the mains before you leave and turn off and secure any gas bottles; take your pets with you; never enter or travel through floodwater; keep listening to your local radio station for information, updates and advice; follow your home or business FloodSafe Plan; and follow all instructions given to you by emergency services.
