Police say they are not ruling out possible outlaw bikie links in the shooting of a man during an attempted carjacking on the Gold Coast.
The 26-year-old was shot in the leg as he sat in his Mitsubishi Triton ute at the corner of Mountain View Ave and Sunshine Pde at Miami about 6pm on Thursday.
He was taken by ambulance to Gold Coast University Hospital in a stable condition.
Speaking on Friday, Gold Coast police Chief Superintendent Craig Hanlon said the man claimed not to know his attacker and detectives had not uncovered any evidence of a road rage incident.
He said the victim told police that a white Commodore with tinted windows had approached his vehicle.
“A person got out of that car, approached him in his vehicle, demanded he leave his vehicle, he refused, and then the person’s produced what he believed to be a sawn-off shotgun and shot him in the left leg,” Supt Hanlon said.
“He never got out of his car – he was actually shot while he was still in his car.”
Supt Hanlon said the victim then drove away from the scene and called an ambulance.
The victim was not from the Gold Coast and was not known to police, he said.
Asked about possible bikie links, Supt Hanlon said none had yet been established “but that’ll form part of our investigation”.
He said the shooting in a busy part of the Gold Coast was a “serious, serious concern”.
“It’s one thing to commit criminal offences but when we’ve got people that are willing to use and discharge firearms, it’s a serious concern for us,” he said.
Supt Hanlon said the shooter, who was a passenger in the Commodore, was described as being of slim build with a dark complexion and a moustache or stubble, and was wearing a singlet.
Detectives have doorknocked the area and are combing through CCTV footage, as well as appealing for public information.
Supt Hanlon said the victim had undergone surgery “and thankfully he’ll be fine”.
