A man is in hospital with life-threatening burns after an apartment went up in flames on the Gold Coast overnight.
Emergency services were called to the fire on University Drive at University Lakes in Varsity Lakes at around 1.10am on Monday.
A Queensland Fire and Emergency Services (QFES) spokesman said four crews were called to the scene where a fire had broken out in an apartment on the second storey of the building.
Paramedics were called to the scene and rushed a 44-year-old man to Royal Brisbane Hospital with life-threatening burns.
The QFES spokesman said surrounding units were evacuated and the fire was out by 1.40am.
Gold Coast police declared the area a crime scene.
Gold Coast district officer chief superintendent Craig Hanlon said the fire caused “significant damage to the unit”.
Supt Hanlon said the scene had been guarded overnight as officers worked to determine the cause of the fire.
“It is too early to say it if is suspicious,” he said.
“Fires are complex in that we have to find the cause of the fire and then that will determine whether it was suspicious.”
Investigations are ongoing.
