POLICE have been investigating a chaotic crash on the Gold Coast which has left the teenage driver of a Nissan Skyline in hospital suffering serious burns across his body.
The Skyline was travelling along Alexander Drive and Gilston Road at Nerang when the vehicle hit a street-light and was engulfed by flames just before 3pm.
The 17-year-old boy managed to escape the car, which was up in flames when firefighters arrived on scene about 3.07pm, according to a Queensland Fire and Emergency Services spokeswoman.
Queensland Ambulance Service paramedics, including critical care and the High Acuity Response Unit, treated the teen for burns to his head, arms and legs, a spokeswoman said.
He was taken to the Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital in a serious but stable condition.
A Queensland Police spokesman said: “Given his injuries we are yet to speak to him, however, investigations are ongoing.”
Firefighters extinguished the blaze and left the area about 3.30pm.
Claims have circulated on social media that the Skyline bearing P-plates was seen speeding up to 40kmh over the limit moments before the crash.
Police could not confirm that information and were not aware of the allegations.

Teenager suffers serious burns after car erupts into flames
October 3: A teenager has suffered serious burns when his car burst into flames after crashing into a street light in Nerang.
The boy was taken to hospital in a serious but stable condition, according to Queensland Ambulance Service.
“He had burns mostly on his arms and legs but also on his head,” a spokesperson said.
The crash occurred at the intersection of Alexander Drive and Gilston Road at 3:01pm.
He remains in the Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital after Critical Care was on board.
Man cut from car after terrifying rollover crash
September 26: A man has suffered head and chest injuries after he lost control of his car on a corner, mounted a median strip, struck a tree and rolled on the Gold Coast.
The 27-year-old man was driving a Honda Accord west along Ashmore Rd at Benowa when he “lost control of the vehicle on a bend just past the intersection of Carrara Rd” about 8.40pm on Sunday.
“The vehicle mounted the medium strip and collided with a tree causing the vehicle to roll and come to rest in the middle of the east bound lanes facing south,” a Gold Coast police spokeswoman said.
Queensland Fire and Emergency Services (QFES) sent three crews to the crash and they “extricated” the driver from the car, a spokeswoman said.
The crews spent almost an hour on scene before leaving about 9.50pm.
Queensland Ambulance Service stated the injured man was taken to Gold Coast University Hospital in a stable condition after he was cut from the vehicle.
Police investigations into the crash were ongoing on Monday morning.
