A day in the life of an ambulance paramedic

A 50-YEAR-OLD man has been placed in an induced coma after he was struck by a falling tree and suffered a critical head injury.

Queensland Ambulance Service (QAS) Operations Supervisor Carmen Jensen said the man was “cutting down some trees” on a private property at Gilston in the Gold Coast hinterland.

“QAS were called to him. Apparently, the tree they had been cutting down fell the opposite way, so the base of the tree has contacted his shoulder region and that has forced him backwards onto the ground,” she said.

“The gentleman appears to have a head injury. No other injuries are obvious.”

Ms Jensen said the man was “placed into an induced coma” to assist in his recovery.

“We had four responding crews (at the property). An ambulance unit, myself, the High Acuity Response Unit and a critical care paramedic,” Ms Jensen said.

Paramedics took the man to Gold Coast University Hospital in a critical condition.

QAS was unable to disclose the street where the incident occurred.
