Main Beach group backs Breakwater cruise ship terminal on The Spit

A RIVAL cruise ship terminal on The Spit that will go head-to-head with Tom Tate’s offshore plan has gained the support of a powerful group and is set to stir huge debate. TELL US WHAT YOU THINK

THE Main Beach Progress Association is supporting a proposed $4.4 billion cruise ship terminal at The Spit that’ll rival Mayor Tom Tate’s offshore terminal.

The ambitious plan for a cruise ship terminal and land development on The Spit — initially unsuccessfully put forward as a Market Led Proposal to State Government in 2015 — was dusted off and resubmitted recently.

BREAKWATER GROUP DUSTS OFF TERMINAL PLAN

The Craig Perry-led Breakwater Group proposal controversially includes developing The Spit north of Sea World which was declared off-limits by Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk late last year.

The State Government earlier this month again rejected it for consideration as a Market Led Proposal but it has won support from the Main Beach Progress Association.

In a statement today, the association secretary Georgie Brown said a survey of members indicated majority support for a project such as Breakwater’s.

“Current committee members believe that a cruise ship terminal and revitalisation of the Spit is important economically for the Gold Coast and the Main Beach area and that appropriate development will enhance the appeal for tourists and locals alike.

“The Main Beach Progress Association notes the development goes beyond the State Government declared ‘off limits’ area north of SeaWorld but compensates for this with even more family-friendly public parkland and facilities than currently exist,” Ms Brown said.

The Breakwater Group isn’t planning to give up on its proposal for a four-berth cruise terminal, superyacht marina and 175 land packages for third-party developers.

It will increase land area at The Spit and Wavebreak, public accessibility and aims to address transport issues with an underwater tunnel from The Spit to Wavebreak Island and connecting bridge to Labrador.

Acting Gold Coast Mayor Donna Gates said today: “The Spit is State Government land. Council is investigating an oceanside cruise ship terminal facility south of SeaWorld resort. That remains our focus.’’
