Commuters faced long delays during the peak period for traffic on Thursday afternoon when a truck spilled debris in northbound lanes of the M1 at Oxenford.
According to the Department of Transport and Main Roads (TMR), a load of rocks was let loose across the motorway at about 3.30pm.
Witnesses said the material spilled was concrete slabs that broke into pieces as they hit the surface of the road.
A police crew was on scene to help direct motorists around the hazard. Although all lanes of the motorway remained open, traffic was at a crawl for a number of hours as motorists dodged the hazard until it was cleared.
The truck which spilled the debris was not involved in an accident and no injuries were reported.
