A giant truck fire has impacted M1 traffic south-bound at a prime commuting time on the Gold Coast.

Police and firefighters were alerted about 6pm to the blaze at Pimpama which was sending thick smoke billowing high into the sky.

A Queensland Police Service spokeswoman said the truck had been ablaze near exit 49 on the side of the M1.

“The trailer of a truck was fully engulfed in fire. There were no explosives on board, there wasn’t too much concern.

“Traffic was reduced down to one lane. We were just there doing traffic control. The fire was extinguished.”

Arrangements for the truck’s removal were being made, the spokeswoman said.

At about 6.30pm, the Queensland Police alerted motorists to likely delays due to the lane closure and to “please avoid the area if possible and drive with caution”.
