TRAFFIC was slowed dramatically on the M1 on Sunday morning as a car exploded into flames on the M1.

The small hatchback, which was in the southbound lanes of the Pacific Motorway at Pimpama, was destroyed in the blaze.

A giant plume of black smoke could be seen from a significant distance away while the car was engulfed by the flames.

Fire and rescue crews doused the vehicle with water and the fire was put out just before 11am.

Nobody is believed to have been hurt in the incident.
