The popular wisdom may say to never work with family, but the Hemsworth brothers haven’t let that deter them as they debut their first feature film together.

Australian production Land of Bad – filmed on the Gold Coast and aired in a special industry screening at HOTA on Wednesday night – co-stars Luke Hemsworth, 43, and his Hollywood heavyweight brother Liam Hemsworth, 34.

Luke joked to the Gold Coast Bulletin that it was a “nightmare” working with Liam, later revealing he was proud of his little brother.

“It was a nightmare,” Luke laughed.

“I became the doctor, the mental health agent, the taxi service.

“No, he’s a beautiful human – he does such a great job in this film. He brought all of his heart and soul, all of his acting prowess.”

Luke said it was impressive to see Liam “take control” of the film set as lead actor while remaining “nurturing” to fellow cast.

“It’s a rare thing,” Luke said.

“He became a commander – he became the part that he needed to become.”

The film follows the story of an American air force drone pilot (Russell Crowe) who provides air support to a US Army Delta Force team in the Philippines.

“(The film) is about how modern warfare is changing,” Luke said.

“It’s an old-school action film with big explosions and big guns.”

Luke joked the brothers – which also include Hollywood megastar Chris Hemsworth – had plenty of warfare practice growing up.

“We’ve done a lot of pretend war, a lot of wrestling at all hours of the night, a lot of having airguns and (saying), ‘Run or it’s really going to hurt,’ – but this was a chance to see him (Luke) operate as a professional, as an accomplished actor.

“It never ceases to amaze me how good he is. There’s a lot of pride seeing the young fella become a leader, to fill the shoes.”

Filling Liam’s running shoes on set, however, required a stunt double.

“It’s a great story – just before shooting this film Liam hurt his knee,” Luke revealed.

“He tore a massive chunk of cartilage out of his knee, so every shot of Liam running is his stunt double.

“You can’t tell, he looked exactly like him, he moves like him and even (I questioned it).”

Shot across the Gold Coast, the bulk of filming for Land of Bad took place at Tamborine Mountain and Hinze Dam, with the peaks of Springbrook National Park prominent in the background.

Luke said it was impressive to see how far the city had come as an industry hub.

“It’s beautiful — the crews are here, everyone is world’s above what people think of us. We are world class,” he said.

“It’s great – I live an hour away, I’m here every second week whenever the surf’s good and whenever the streets are quiet.”

Land of Bad is released in cinemas in the United States this month and Australian cinemas mid-year.
