A prisoner attacked a guard with a pen, severely damaging her eye, and belted a cop with knuckle dusters during a raft of offending.

Lawrence Goltz, 41, pleaded guilty in Beenleigh Magistrates Court on February 27 to serious assault of a public officer causing bodily harm.

The court heard the Woodridge man was in custody in Borallon Correctional Centre on December 5, 2021.

On that day, a prison officer had a conversation with staff around suspicious drug activity.

The court heard Goltz tell the officer “why the f*** you on to us you dumb slut?”.

She responded: “Your language is offensive, I’m just doing my job.”

Goltz replied by calling her a “maggot dog, dumb s**t.”

He picked up a plastic pen and threw it, hitting her in her right eye.

The victim had to be seen by an optometrist and was prescribed eye drops.

A photo tendered to the court showed the red and inflamed swelling of the eye.

The court heard Goltz also punched a cop in the face with knuckle dusters and was charged with serious assault of a police officer in July, 2021

Goltz previously assaulted a police officer in December, 2020 and was jailed by Beenleigh Magistrates Court for the incident.

Goltz’ defence lawyer said his attack on the prison officer with the pen was “accidental and not malicious”.

“It was not an intentional act and was towards the lower end of the scale,” the lawyer said.

Magistrate Tracy Mossop said Goltz’ behaviour was concerning.

“Your violent behaviour has escalated — three times you have assaulted a police officer or correctional services officer,” she said.

“The pain in the prison officer’s eye would have caused her serious discomfort.

“You need to stay away from drugs, address your mental health and stop being violent.”

Goltz was sentenced to 19 months in jail with immediate parole after spending five months in pre-sentence custody.
