A Brisbane father has been hit with a $1200 fine after police busted him for allegedly driving with two young boys in the back seat not correctly wearing seatbelts.

A Tingalpa man is $1209 poorer after police busted him for allegedly driving with two boys in the back seat not correctly wearing seatbelts.

Police pulled over the 33-year-old dad on busy Compton Rd at Kuraby just after 8.15am on Monday.

The officers alleged a six-year-old boy was seated in the right-side back seat, but had the middle seat belt wrapped around his neck while a five-year-old boy was not properly secured in his booster seat with an H-harness.

Police said the fine, for driving while passengers aged between four and seven were unrestrained, also carried a penalty of four demerit points.

Acting Inspector Kylie Doyle said if the driver had crashed, it would have likely resulted in significant, possibly life-threatening, injuries for the two children.

“Failure to wear a seatbelt is one of the leading causes of road crash death, unrestrained drivers and passengers are eight times more likely to be killed in a road crash,” she said.

“Road safety starts with the decisions you make before your journey begins, like ensuring all passengers are safely secured by seatbelts.”

As of Monday, August 26, 12 people have died on South Brisbane Police District roads, five more than at the same time last year.

Police said they had adopted a zero-tolerance policy of unsafe driving.
