Ever wanted to live on the country’s largest camel dairy? Scenic Rim tourist attraction Summer Land Camels is hiring a dairy hand in what could be Australia’s weirdest job offer.

Covid 19 Killing Tourism Businesses

The country’s largest camel dairy is searching for a new dairy hand to live and work on its farm and tourist attraction, west of Ipswich.

Summer Land Camels has more than 500 camels living on 850ha at Harrisville, a 45-minute drive west of Brisbane.

It is not only Australia’s largest camel dairy, the attraction is also the world’s largest wild camel training centre.

About 1000 visitors a week come to take camel rides, milk the animals and even eat a camel burger at the farm cafe.

It has big plans for expansion and is on the lookout for a new dairy hand to work across a seven-day milking roster, with the successful applicant living in on-farm accommodation.

Reporting directly to the dairy manager, the role requires someone with a positive attitude, good work ethic and eagerness to learn.

The dairy hand will ensure safe and efficient milking and food safety guidelines are upheld, conduct daily animal health checks, use low-stress stock handling techniques to handle camels and implement training programs for new dairy cows, operate farm machinery and keep farm areas clean and tidy.

The camels need a lot of feeding.

Summer Land’s job ad also called for people with a passion to work with animals, demonstrated skills in animal handling and — preferably — past experience in irrigation, silage and hay production.

Formal qualifications in animal husbandry, agriculture, or related field would be highly regarded.

If this is you, apply with a covering letter addressing the above criteria and resume by December 3 to: admin@summerlandcamels.com.au
