A Logan man allegedly poured petrol on his partner’s car and threatened to set it on fire during an out of control argument, police stating they smelt petrol and saw a yellow jerry can.

Shaemis Michael McCormack applied for bail in Beenleigh Magistrates Court on April 22, charged with one count of attempted arson of a motor vehicle and assault occasioning bodily harm (domestic violence offences).

Police allege on December 9, 2023 the 38-year-old Loganlea man poured petrol over his partner’s car after an argument out the front of their home.

Mr McCormack then allegedly threatened to set the car on fire.

The court heard police officers smelt petrol coming from the car and saw a yellow jerry can near the vehicle.

Defence lawyer Jacilynn Young said there had been a material change in circumstances which meant bail could be granted.

“He has spent four months in custody and has been granted acceptance into a drug rehab home,” she said.

“The rehab has strict rules, it will notify the police if he breaks the rules or absconds from the premises.

“It has random drug testing and offers anger management courses as well.”

Magistrate Patrina Clohessy granted bail under strict conditions.

“I’m satisfied that the risks of bail can be adequately ameliorated by the conditions that have been offered,” said Magistrate Clohessy.

“He must not use illicit substances and must report to police.

“There is also no contact allowed with the alleged victim.”

The matter was adjourned to Beenleigh Magistrates Court on May 9.
