Staff at Queensland’s largest hospital were left shaken after a violent attempted carjacking on Monday.
An investigation into the incident is under way after a woman in her 20s had the window of her Mazda smashed, while it was parked on the roadside near the Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital in broad daylight.
The alleged attack occurred in front of drivers and passers on Gilchrist Ave, less than 200m from the hospital front door, at 11am.
Witnesses said a man, allegedly wielding a knife, used a rock to break the window and then allegedly threatened the woman, who got out of the car.
Onlookers took her to safety and she later received medical treatment at the hospital.
Two men gave chase and detained a man until police arrived.
Police scoured nearby Victoria Park and along Gilchrist Ave before witnesses, many hospital staff and medical students, were able to get to their cars.
One witness told police a woman medical student had also been threatened by a man who asked for her car keys while she was on her way to her car after finishing her shift on Monday.
A 47-year-old Annerley man faced armed robbery charges in Brisbane Magistrates Court on Monday following the incident which was witnessed by hospital staff.
He is due back in court this month.
