A new $11 million southside football oval, the size of the MCG, will play a leading role in changing the face of junior Australian rules football competitions starting next year.

The 5.5 hectare AFL oval and Auskick field which opened at Greenbank this month will ultimately allow more junior games to be played across southeast Queensland each weekend.

The state-of-the-art AFL oval and Auskick field were designed by construction giant Mirvac in conjunction with Logan City Council and AFL Queensland.

Organisers of the new venue stressed that contracts were yet to be signed and it was still too early to determine exactly how the new facility would be used next year.

Clubhouse facilities are being constructed with completion expected by June at the complex, which will be home to the Park Ridge Pirates, an Auskick centre, and other community events.

Once the $5 million clubhouse facilities are built, the new $16 million complex will open the way for local AFL junior teams to use the competition-grade AFL grounds for weekend and seasonal competitions.

AFL Queensland’s venue and government partnerships manager Damien Mitchelmore said the venue would provide a great experience for both the Pirates and visiting teams.

“In time, with increasing participation, it will allow for more games to be played at a purpose-built facility,” Mr Mitchelmore said.

“The location in Everleigh will allow the club and other programs to be more accessible to the local communities.

“More than 100 kids are currently completing the Auskick program in Everleigh.”

Mirvac general manager residential development Queensland Warwick Bible said the opening of the oval marked the beginning of new sporting opportunities for the region.

“Years ago, Mirvac set out to deliver an AFL precinct with top-notch facilities and amenities as part of our broader 25-hectare Everleigh Regional Sports Park, designed to enhance the wellbeing and lifestyle of our residents and the Logan community,” he said.

“The completion of the Everleigh AFL oval is the first stage of our team delivering on this promise and we know it will play a significant role in introducing new sporting opportunities for generations to come.”
