Australia's Court System

A man searched by police at Logan’s Hyperdome Shopping Centre was discovered in possession of a large knife and cannabis.

Sean Phillip Williams pleaded guilty to charges of possessing a knife in a public place and possessing dangerous drugs in Beenleigh Magistrates Court on Thursday.

The court heard a Big W staffer reported seeing Williams visibly drug or alcohol affected while shopping at the Hyperdome Shopping Centre in Shailer Park at about 12pm on June 30.

Police prosecutor Sergeant Darrel Armfield said staff at the shopping centre observed him removing a large knife from his bag and using it to cut open a packet of singlets that he had just purchased.

The court heard police tracked him down a short time later, and he was located sitting outside the Kmart entry of the shopping centre.

He was approached by police and later confirmed that he had a knife.

Police found the knife in his bag, along with clip sealed bag containing a small quantity of cannabis.

The court heard Williams said he used the knife for his work as a removalist but hadn’t been working at the time.

Williams, who represented himself in court, said he had “no excuse” for his actions.

He said the cannabis in his possession had been for personal use and he smoked it to help with his depression.

“It helps me get through my day,” he said.

He was ordered to pay $1050 in fines, with no conviction recorded.
