A young auto worker from Logan has been warned to change his violent ways after unleashing a vicious ‘unprovoked’ attack on his ex-girlfriend.

Leam Bodie Smith, 21, of Kingston, pleaded guilty in Beenleigh District Court on Thursday to five domestic violence offences: Two counts of assault occasioning bodily harm and one each of choking, suffocation or strangulation in a domestic setting, common assault and wilful damage.

The court heard Smith became “enraged” with his ex-girlfriend and inflicted an “unprovoked” attack on her on January 31, 2020.

Smith, who was 19 at the time of offending, kicked a hole in the wall and grabbed the victim by the throat, causing her pain as his nails dug into her skin.

The victim unsuccessfully attempted to calm him down, and Smith grabbed her by the throat with both hands and squeezed, making it difficult to breathe.

She pushed him in an attempt to get away, and then Smith let go of her and punched her in the face, which forced her to fall to the floor.

At that point, Smith stopped and apologised to the victim, and she responded by telling him to leave her alone.

The court heard Smith had been sentenced for two separate assaults occasioning bodily harm matters in 2019 when he was 18.

Smith’s lawyer told the court his client studied an automotive course at TAFE and began an apprenticeship in spray paint.

He said Smith had also completed a Responsible Men behaviour-change program over 16 weeks.

Judge Jackson described the offending as “disgraceful behaviour.”

“This kind of behaviour simply cannot continue,” he said.

“You need to find a different way of solving your problems.”

He was sentenced to two years imprisonment with an immediate parole release date. Convictions were recorded.
