Joseph Noble from Logan Basketball has been voted Logan’s best sports coach, after nearly 10 years of volunteering his time at the local club.

Noble said although his work as a volunteer coach wasn’t about recognition, he felt ‘quietly chuffed’ to be crowned Logan’s best coach.

“It’s definitely a nice feeling to know people appreciate what I do,” he said.

“Especially after nine years of being a volunteer coach at the club.

“I really do love it and don’t see myself stopping anytime soon.”

Originally from New Zealand, Noble picked up his life and moved to Logan over a decade ago.

It wasn’t long after the move that he started playing club level basketball with Logan Basketball.

“I remember after a game they asked me if I’d ever considered coaching,” Noble said.

“I thought why not … I like the chance to yell at people … kidding of course.

“So yeah I kind of just fell into it and now it’s such a huge part of my life. I love it.”

The dedicated coach gives up his time five nights a week – or six nights a week during rep season – in addition to leading his teams on the weekend.

Under Logan Basketball, Noble is the current President of Jazz Basketball looking after about 200 children ranging from 7 to 18 year olds. He is also the coaching co-ordinator, helping more than 20 other coaches.

Last season he coached the under 16 Boys Thunder team, and is coaching the under 16 girls Thunder Gold team in the upcoming basketball season.

He also helps out with various Jazz Club teams on Friday nights, when he volunteers his time from 4pm to about 10pm every week.

Noble said in his nine years of coaching he has learnt a lot about himself, the kids, and made some lifelong friendships.

“It was great because after moving here from New Zealand I was able to make friends so easily and now everyone feels like family,” he said.

“For me it’s really about the relationships you build with the kids and families.

“It’s incredibly rewarding helping them and seeing them enjoy the game and grow as players.

“I never turn away a player. At a club level anyone can play and I’ll do everything I can to make sure they’re getting something out of it and enjoying the game.”

Outside of coaching basketball Noble works at the Coles supply chain and has just welcomed his first child into the world.

“For a long time there I didn’t have any children of my own so it was really great for me to help other kids achieve their dreams and have fun,” he said.

“My wife and I have just had our first child … a baby girl we named Aurora.

“It took years but now my wife also loves basketball so it really is a family ordeal.”
