Logan mayor Jon Raven has married his partner and Logan City Council officer Alison Liddell in a “surprise” backyard wedding on the weekend.
The pair, who met while both were working at Council, tied the knot in front of family and friends at the couple’s Logan residence, keeping the event secret and out of the public eye.
Mr Raven has two children from a previous relationship.
Ms Liddell, now the Logan mayoress, wore a pink flowing gown while Mr Raven wore a black suit.
Ms Liddell, an avid equestrian, has worked at Logan council for 10 years where she rose to the post of senior project change analyst in April last year.
The couple met after Mr Raven first entered the council in 2016.
As mayoress, Ms Liddell wants to volunteer for the city’s charitable trust to “turbocharge’’ its fundraising, which prompted one councillor to call for a review into the role which another councillor labelled as sexist.
But the request for a report into the role was rejected as Mayoress Raven’s role is as an unpaid volunteer with the Logan Charitable Trust.
The charity was set up by Logan City council in 2017 to raise funds for local charities and operates as a separate entity to council.
“Living, working and volunteering in our community is what it’s all about,” Ms Raven wrote on social media about her council mayoress role.
“It’s a privilege to be able to support Mayor Jon Raven and give back to our community – and I will happily do so for as long as they will have me.
“I am looking forward to the future of the City of Logan Charitable Trust.”
At last week’s ordinary council meeting, councillor Lisa Bradley called for the report including legal advice regarding the role of the Mayoress, which is not referred to in the council’s charter or Queensland’s Local Government Act.
But the request only attracted three votes out of 10 councillors, with Cr Raven unable to vote due to a conflict of interest.
He said the mayoress would not be replacing him at events and said the role had no financial benefit to the mayoress.
