A Logan man faced a southeast Queensland Court after he stabbed a stranger in an altercation.

Jacob Lee Hutchinson, 28, was charged with one count of unlawfully wounding another and one count of contravention of a probation order.

The Woodridge man pleaded guilty to both offences in Beenleigh District Court on Thursday.

The court heard that the victim was with his three friends in a Woodridge carport on March 25 last year.

His female friend went to speak with the then 27-year-old, who he previously did not know, and the conversation began to escalate.

The victim noticed and walked towards him, while the defendant also moved towards his direction.

The victim pushed Hutchinson on his chest, before he lunged forward when the victim ducked.

The defendant then produced a 15cm paring knife and stabbed him multiple times in his left shoulder.

He was taken to Princess Alexandra Hospital for treatment.

The victim suffered a laceration overlying the left posterior deltoid, a 2cm laceration overlying the back in the cervical vertebral region and a 3cm laceration overlying his left shoulder blade.

Police located Hutchinson on April 20, but he declined an interview.

The court was told that he was abused in his childhood and had been diagnosed previously with autism, ADHD and a learning disability.

He was also on probation for an unrelated offence when he committed the offending.

Judge Craig Chowdhury said the defendant was “lucky” that the stabbing only caused lacerations.

“When you’re stabbing someone with a sharp weapon, you can easily, even if you don’t tend to, have the knife or blade or whatever you’ve got to go through between the ribs and cut the lungs or an organ and cause massive internal bleeding meaning to die,” he said.

“But it doesn’t matter whether you’re affected by a liquor or drug, or whether you’re enraged or whatever the situation is, you can’t attack people with a knife.”

Mr Chowdhury sentenced Hutchinson to 2.5 years’ jail, and declared his 438 days in pre-sentence custody as served, giving him parole eligibility from Thursday.
