A Brisbane trade business owner has been disqualified from driving after he was banned for being caught using his phone while driving three times in six months, racking up a total of 28 demerit points.

The owner of a well known Brisbane tiling business has fronted court after racking up 28 demerit points over three years, including three fines for using his phone while driving in the past six months.

Jack Karng, 51, pleaded guilty to driving without a license after being demerit point suspended on June 24.

He appeared before Cleveland Magistrates Court on July 22.

The court heard Mr Karng was driving on Old Cleveland Rd at Birkdale about 7pm when he was intercepted by police.

“He was suspended from driving after accumulating too many speeding and mobile phone infringements,” a police prosecutor said.

“He would know better than anyone that he had no points left.’’

Mr Karng’s lawyer, Oliver Labone, said his client was unaware he had been suspended.

“It was a matter of him not checking his mail,” Mr Labone said.

“He owns a company that does outdoor tiling and is still required to drive.

“He is now relying on employees to drive him.

“He is a father and his children live in Sydney.’’

Magistrate Deborah Vasta said Mr Karngh needed to keep his phone away from his hands and lap when driving.

“Your phone is the reason you’re now off the road,” Ms Vasta said.

“I have taken your early plea of guilty into consideration.’’

Mr Karngh was convicted, fined $500 and disqualified from driving for six months.

A conviction was recorded.
