Flagstone business owner David Kirkland found guilty of drug driving

A Logan man who runs a popular car detailing business has been told to make a choice between drugs or his work after pleading guilty to drug driving.

A local business owner has been told to take a hard look at his priorities after losing his licence for drug driving.

Beaudesert Magistrates court heard the 22-year-old small business owner was driving with cannabis in his system, a day after enjoying a joint on a camping trip with mates.

He was charged with drug driving, fined, and had his license disqualified for three months.

The court heard on May 16 this year Kirkland was pulled over by police at Beaudesert for a random drug test.

Police prosecutor Senior Constable Andrew Bjerring told the court Kirkland supplied police with a saliva sample.

“He said he’d smoked cannabis through a joint the day before,” Senior Constable Bjerring said.

The Court heard Mr Kirkland had been camping with mates the evening before the random drug test.

His lawyer requested a work license for Mr Kirkland, to enable him to continue running his business.

His business, DK Detailing, is based in Flagstone.

Magistrate Tracy Mossop said his prior history prevented him from being able to apply for a work license.

“You need to work out what’s important in your life,” Ms Mossop told Kirkland.

“Is it your job or having cannabis?

David Kirkland pleaded guilty to drug driving at Beaudesert Magistrates court on Tuesday August 24.

“Because on this occasion cannabis is going to take your license away again for three months.”

The court heard this was Kirkland’s second offence involving drugs.

“For that reason I will not record a conviction but you’re not going to get the benefit of a third time,” Ms Mossop said.

Kirkland was convicted of drug driving, fined $350, and disqualified from holding or obtaining a driver’s license for three months.

“Just try and make some better choices in relation to your life,” Ms Mossop said.

“These drugs are illegal.

“You’ve now got three months to think about that.”
