Father Daniel Maher dies after alleged Waterford West hit-and-run
Tributes are flowing for a devoted Logan father killed in an alleged hit-and-run just before a milestone birthday.
A family is preparing to farewell a devoted father-of-two killed in an alleged hit-and-run just weeks before his 30th birthday.
Daniel Benjamin Maher, 29, was walking home from a friend’s house in Waterford West when he was struck by a vehicle at the intersection of Chambers Flat Rd and Burke St.
Police allege Mr Maher was hit by a Holden Colorado dual cab after 8pm on November 20.
At the time of the accident police said the driver of the vehicle left the scene, but have since revealed that he later returned. The 25-year-old Redland Bay man is now assisting police with their inquiries.
No charges have been laid.
Mr Maher was rushed to the Princess Alexandra Hospital with life-threatening injuries. He spent two days in a coma before he succumbed to his injuries.
His brother Jamie Godfrey said the family was shattered by the loss of the second youngest of six siblings.
“He fought as hard as he could ... he was in a coma and on life support,” Mr Godfrey said.
“We were organising a get-together with the family and friends ... instead of planning a milestone celebration, we are now preparing to say goodbye far too soon.”
Mr Godfrey said the family was still reeling from the death of youngest brother Nathan in an accident at Deception Bay three years ago.
“My younger brother passed away, he had a disability, he couldn’t really say Daniel so he called him Danger,” he said.
“We are just lost for words. We are shattered, we are trying to bury him and get closure and find out what happened.”
Mr Maher has been remembered as a hard-working man and a devoted father to daughters, Savannah and Neveah.
“They went to Margate Beach the other weekend, he took the kids swimming. He was hard working and very family oriented,” Mr Godfrey said.
“Being a father was his main thing in life, being a proud dad and working hard to maintain his children.
“Daniel was a loving and devoted father to his two beautiful little girls, who will now grow up without their dad. He adored them more than anything in this world, and the thought of them growing up without his hugs, love and his laughter breaks our hearts.”
A fundraiser has been launched to help the family cover sudden funeral expenses and the ongoing costs of raising Mr Maher’s daughters.
