A southside shopping centre will become home to one of the country’s largest pharmaceutical and beauty products outlets when a superstore opens in the next month.
Cosmetic and fragrance giant Ultra Beauty has joined forces with Aussie market leader Chemist Warehouse, and together will open a massive outlet, complete with a beauty parlour, at Logan’s Hyperdome before June.
The superstore will take over the former JB Hi-Fi site, which was under the Hyperdome’s cinemas and piazza eatery.
The shake-up comes a year after a mass exodus of women’s fashion retailers from the Hyperdome.
Ultra offers shoppers high-end items from luxe brands including Diptyque, Olaplex, Gucci and Chanel.
It will work with Chemist Warehouse using the “shop in shop” concept, created to give down-to-earth shoppers the “opportunity to shop premium in an environment that makes them comfortable”.
The new store will open less than 1km from two other Chemist Warehouse outlets on Bryants Rd and 3km from an established store at Riverlakes Shopping Centre on Beenleigh-Redland Bay Rd.
Chemist Warehouse staff member Liv Bedford dismissed rumours that nearby stores would close.
“Chemist warehouse and Ultra Beauty are going into the same spot, as it’s such a big space,” she said online.
“I work at Bryants Rd store and none of the other stores are closing down.”
JB HI-Fi moved from the lower-level location into the main foyer of the Hyperdome late last year.
Since then, the site has remained vacant until work on fitting out the store started this week.
It is expected the 1015 sqm outlet will include an up-market beauty salon with the store stocking high-end and low-end cosmetics, fragrances, nail and body products along with hair care and beauty tools.
It will be in direct competition with Wesfarmers’ Priceline, inside the main shopping centre.
The privately-owned Chemist Warehouse, which raked in a massive $550m pre-tax profit from revenue of about $3.08bn in 2022, was contacted for comment.
Chemist Warehouse is the country’s largest discount pharmaceutical retailer, dominating Terry White Chemart and Sigma Pharmaceuticals, which owns brands Amcal, and Priceline.
The first of its stores opened in Melbourne in 2000 and since then it has expanded to more than 491 locations across 370 Australian suburbs, towns and cities.
The new store will be among 30 pharmaceutical chemist outlets in the postcode 4130.
