Flagstone teen Callum Wilson has pleaded guilty to driving under the influence, after a four-wheel drive camping trip gone horribly wrong.

Callum John Wilson, 19, pleaded guilty in the Beaudesert Magistrates court this week, after police found him intoxicated at Bushman Drive Flagstone on the scene of a single vehicle crash, August 1 at 5.30am.

Magistrate Tracy Mossop sentenced Wilson to an eight-month licence disqualification and ordered him to pay an $800 fine.

The court heard when police arrived at the scene of the crash, Wilson was outside the vehicle and several witnesses were present.

Police prosecutor Senior Constable Andrew Bjerring told the court Wilson was ‘swaying’ and appeared intoxicated.

“He produced a current P1 driver’s license and stated he was the driver,” Senior Constable Bjerring said.

“A roadside breath test was conducted and he had a reading of 0.15.”

Wilson told the court this was the first time he had been in trouble with the law.

“I’m very remorseful for what has happened,” he said.

“I can’t believe my stupidity.

“It was a foolish decision to spend the night camping and four wheel driving while drinking in the bush behind my property.”

Wilson said on the drive there they had become bogged on an off-road track, and were stuck for several hours.

“The only way to get back home was to go down Bushman Drive a few hundred metres to get onto a different track because we got bogged going the other way,” he said.

The court heard the accident was caused when Wilson swerved to avoid hitting a kangaroo.

He said he was pretty sure his four wheel drive was a ‘write off’.

“I’m really grateful that I didn’t injure anybody else or myself,” Wilson said.

Ms Mossop said it was better the vehicle was written off.

“As opposed to you being a write-off,” she said.

“You should be grateful that you’re even standing here today … as opposed to on a video screen because you’ve killed or injured somebody and got put in custody or not being here at all. You could have in fact killed yourself.

“This sentence is to punish you and to serve as a deterrence to you committing an offence like this in the future

“Do not drive in the next eight months. If you do you’ll lose it for two years.”

No convictions were recorded.

Ms Mossop said if Wilson was ever before the court with something similar, he would inevitably have a conviction recorded.
