A retired Logan factory worker has pleaded guilty to an “unsophisticated” robbery of a local petrol station after terrorising the young solo staff member by yelling abuse, screaming and breaking electric cables around the cash register.
Brooke Amanda Wolfenden, 58, pleaded guilty to one count of robbery at BP on Logan River Road on January 2, 2023 at 8.10pm.
Wolfendenden appeared in the dock at Beenleigh District Court on July 25, 2024.
The court heard the mother of two entered the petrol station and smacked her hand on the counter numerous times while swearing, yelling and demanding money.
The “vulnerable” employee said he had no money which angered Wolfenden to the point that she began banging her hands and tore apart security wires that prevented her access to the employee area, the court was told.
Crown Prosecutor L Peddle said Wolfenden had criminal convictions in Queensland, Western Australia and the Northern Territory.
“In July of 2024 she was put on probation for serious assault while being arrested for a public nuisance offence,” Ms Peddle said.
“She was refused service of alcohol then punched the register, spat on the wall which sprayed onto the employee and then tried to strike to strike the employee in the face with her hand,” she said.
The court heard Wolfenden had a history of “violent offending”.
Ms Peddle said submitted that Wolfenden would serve 18 months of imprisonment with immediate release as she had served 204 days in pre sentence custody for the charge.
Wolfenden’s barrister CM Hurley said she had retired from working in a factory after an accident caused the loss of her leg.
“It seem she was drinking heavily at the time of the offence which has had some impact on her recollection... She pleaded guilty at the first opportunity,” Ms Hurley said.
“She did acknowledge her involvement in a very unsophisticated robbery.
“It is clear she has ongoing issues and probation would be appropriate for her rehabilitation,” she said.
Her Honour Judge Katarina Prskalo KC said Wolfenden’s actions confused and scared the young sales assistant.
“He was a vulnerable man working at night... He is entitled to feel safe at work,” Judge Prskalo said.
“You slammed your fists and swore at him before he gave you $150 cash that you snatched, touching him in the process.
“I note that your offending occurred as a result of excessive drinking, you lost your leg in an accident in 2019 and suffer ongoing pain,” she said.
Wolfenden was sentenced to serve 18 months of suspended imprisonment, with 204 days of presentence custody considered time already served.
A conviction was recorded.
