Brisbane Boys College First VIII have made it into the top eight, out of a field of 43, in the prestigious Henley on Thames Royal Regatta in England.
The team, which has been in the UK for a week ahead of the race meet, had a day of rest yesterday after beating the Welsh team from Llandaff Rowing Club.
The Brisbane boys have progressed through to the quarterfinals on Friday, when they will race against the current titleholders St Paul’s School, from England.
The race is expected to be well watched as St Paul’s will want to retain the Princess Elizabeth Challenge Cup.
The semi finals will be held on Saturday and the finals will be on Sunday.
The quarterfinal race between BBC and St paul’s UK will be on Friday at 8pm Brisbane time and will be live streamed here: via YouTube.
The competition is in a match-play format pitting two crews against each other with the winning crew progressing to the next round, while the losing crew is eliminated.
The BBC team was one of the Australian teams to be attracted to the event which had 43 entries and 32 schoolboy crews.
Ahead of the initial race, college headmaster Andre Casson said the entire BBC community would be cheering on the boys.
“Everyone at BBC is incredibly proud of our First VIII rowers as the Henley Royal Regatta is such a prestigious event,” Mr Casson said.
“To compete there is evidence of exceptional talent and unshakeable determination.
“I know that the entire BBC community will be cheering the boys on as they represent our college in the Green, White, and Black on the world stage.
“It’s a magnificent achievement that speaks to these young men’s quality of character and strength of spirit.”
The First VIII and a reserve left Brisbane last week and, since touching down in the UK, has been training out of the Maidenhead Rowing Club in preparation for the event.
They will be competing for the Princess Elizabeth Challenge Cup, which the college won for the first time in 1993.
This year’s Henley holds special significance for the BBC team as it will be 30 years since the college first won the royal regatta and the team hopes to bring back that cup.
If the team wins on Friday, they will go into the semi-finals.
The profile of the college’s rowing program has grown since winning the Greater Public Schools Head of the River in March, making it three years in a row.
Former BBC old boy Matt Kesby, who was in the original crew which won in 1993, has been on the banks of the Thames watching and encouraging the team.
Mr Kesby, chief executive of digital business GoTeam, sponsored this year’s crew, which is made up of students from years 10 to 12 and includes twins Daniel and Matt Cashman.
Others in the team include Beau Palmer, David Granzin, Tom Stevens, Xavier Rubens, Joe Thynne, Mitch Owen, Liam Crook and Conrad Scott.
