A Woodridge couple found with 3.45kg of cannabis, scales and almost $20,000 cash as part of AN0M, Australia’s largest ever police drug bust has faced court

Alexis Jade Hinton, 23, and Majok Chol, 25, pleaded guilty in Beenleigh District Court on November 21 to possession of dangerous drugs over 500g and possession of proceeds suspected of being used in a drug offence.

The court heard that on June 7, 2021 their Woodridge home was raided by Queensland Police where they uncovered 3.45kg of cannabis around the house.

A large amount of the drug was found packed into clip-seal bags, measured in pounds along with scales, incriminating text messages and $19,900 cash.

Hinton’s defence said she started smoking cannabis due to a back injury from a car crash.

The pregnant mother of two said she was working on her drug treatment and overcoming her reliance on cannabis.

The court heard Chol was the father of the two children and immigrated to Australia from Kenya when he was four years old.

He planned to undertake training as a panel beater and start his own business.

Judge David Kent KC said the evidence showed a clear intent to supply.

“A large part of the drug was packaged to facilitate supply to other people and the phones had messages referring to selling drugs,” he said.

Mr Kent said there was a common misconception about cannabis.

“Cannabis is regarded by some people as not a very dangerous drug. It may not be for a lot of people but for some it is extraordinarily dangerous.

“It was described to me by one expert as a bullet to the brain.”

Hinton was sentenced to 12 months in prison with an immediate parole release date and Chol was sentenced to 18 months in prison, also with an immediate parole release date.
