A DAY of gridlock on the M1 has sparked renewed calls for the so-called “M2” — a second Gold Coast motorway.
The M1 became paralysed after a crash at Loganholme early this morning and another this afternoon the city was hit by 24km of slow traffic as the Easter exodus began.
State Opposition leader Deb Frecklington took aim at the Palaszczuk Government and called on the ALP to back plans for a second M1 to relieve congestion.
Ms Frecklington said she was concerned by the significant gridlock on the very of the Commonwealth Games.
“There was more than 20km of chaos on the M1 and there is no alternative route,” she said.
“This is why we need a second M1 so we have an alternative route.
“In the lead-up to one of the busiest weekends of the year on the Roads and the
Commonwealth Games, the question is — why is the government not planning for the people of the Gold Coast and Brisbane.”
Before last November’s state election the LNP pledged $500 million to build a second M1 from Nerang north to Stapylton Labor refused to back the project.
Labor won the election after campaigning on widening the M1 from Reedy Creek to the border.
The RACQ said both measures would be needed to improve traffic flow on the stretch of road.
Ms Frecklington also took aim at Games lanes which will come into effect on Gold Coast roads from tomorrow.
The measure will keep lanes with yellow outlines free for use by Games officials, police and athletes travelling to venues.
