COUNCIL trucks have started rolling in to Labrador to evict “iconic” tinnies lining the foreshore, despite a petition signed by 800 locals asking for them to stay.

Tinnie owner Wayne Hayes, speaking from the foreshore, said a smaller truck with skis, kayaks and other small water vessels were already on one truck.

Mr Hayes said he believed they had been taken from the Biggera Waters foreshore and the trucks were heading south.

“There are five on the water’s edge here at Labrador chained to the trees and one ski up the foreshore more,” he said.

“I got the heads up from someone in the building above me so I dragged my boat down to the water’s edge because I believe that if it’s anchored in the tidal zone it’ll be okay.

“I saw a compliance officer down here a few days ago so he must have been counting boats to figure out how many trucks he’d need.

“The funny thing is, local councillor Ryan Bayldon-Lumsden has told us he’d get it sorted,” Mr Hayes said.

Mr Hayes understood Cr Bayldon-Lumsden would submit the petition with 800 signatures, organised by Member for Bonney Sam O’Connor, to the council next week.

“Obviously council officers have decided that they’ve given us two weeks grace.”

Tinnie owners were given removal stickers in May after the council said it received complaints vessels were “being left unlawfully” on the Broadwater foreshore.

There used to be about 50 lining the shores but only about half a dozen remain.

Previously, Cr Bayldon-Lumsden said his “personal” view was he hoped a solution could be found so the “little boats” could stay in a compliant manner.

They are between Quota Park at Biggera Waters and Len Fox Park at Labrador.

Mr Hayes said he still had some serious concerns about whether the council had authority over the Gold Coast waterways and foreshore and that the stickers called the boats “abandoned vehicles”.

The Bulletin understands Mr O’Connor’s petition has been approved by Gold Coast City Council and was due to be tabled to council next week.
