A GOLD Coast whale watching operator has captured a rare event during whale migration, photographing a baby stopping for a feast as it heads north.
Whales in Paradise owner Anthony Ardern spotted a juvenile whale only about one kilometre east of Southport who took about 2.5 hours from its migration schedule to snack on some Gold Coast yellowtail.
Whales don’t usually feed throughout their migration, living off their body fat.
Mr Ardern said that in a decade of whale watching he had only seen whales feeding once before.
“It is really an incredible thing to see and it just goes to show what healthy waters we have here,” he said.
“Whales’ normal food is krill, however they will eat smaller fish.
“Usually they’re very hungry when finish their migration but this one clearly couldn’t wait, it was just gorging itself on yellowtail.”
