JOEL Parkinson says he wants to beat lifelong rival Mick Fanning in a heat at J-Bay Pro ahead of the event kicking off in South Africa today.

Both surfers have dominated in the event for more than a decade with Parkinson, 35, winning the event twice (1999 and 2009) and Mick Fanning, also 35, winning three times (2002, 2006, 2014).

Parkinson said he’s still dirty on his mate for beating him the last time they surfed against each other in the final of the J-Bay Pro two years ago.

“I’d love to have a final against Mick at J-Bay,” the 2012 world champion told writer Sean Doherty for Surfing Life.

Parkinson, who said he had a “black book” of surfers he wants to beat which includes Fanning, who fought off a great white on live television in the final of the event last year.

“In fact, it wouldn’t even need to be a final,” Parkinson said.

“‘It could just be a three man heat I wouldn’t care.

“I’d just ignore the other guy and go sit on Mick.

“I’d hate to think the heat we surfed against each other was that J-Bay final two years ago, a heat anywhere with Mick would be great.

“I’m not done yet.

“There are still a few guys I need to beat first,” he said.

Parkinson said he had weathered three waves of new talent coming onto World Surfing League Championship Tour with eleven time world champion Kelly Slater, 44, and Fanning.

But he said he is not sure how long they can keep fighting off young talent like Hawaiian John John Florence and Brazilian 2014 world champion Gabriel Medina.

“We’ve survived a few hype storms and I think it has finally arrived,” he said.

“I want to let the young guys take the wheel.

“Time moves on and it’s good to see. Man, the talent on tour is so good and I think its in a good place.”
