THE Gold Coast is hosting Australia’s — if not the world’s — largest electronic dance music festival since the COVID pandemic swept the globe and decimated live music.

A sold-out event attracting 8000 music revellers, Lunar Electric Music Festival starts at Doug Jennings Park at The Spit on Saturday from 11am.

Founder and director Simon Leigh said the festival was moved from Port Macquarie so it could be opened to a bigger audience.

“It was an easy choice as the Gold Coast is undoubtedly the entertainment mecca of Australia with a youthful population and amazing weather,” he said.

“We have curated a line-up featuring the biggest names in Australian electronic music such as Timmy Trumpet, Will Sparks, Joel Fletcher and Havana Brown as well as hip-hop and bass performers such as Hooligan Hefs, Masked Wolf and HP Boyz.”

Up and coming artists, vocalist, dancers and performers are also getting the chance to boost their careers on a festival scale, something that’s been lacking for the past year.

“Due to the success of this festival already, we have been working behind the scenes to bring another one to the Gold Coast in September, with a date to be announced next week,” he said.

The economic impact on the city is expected to be huge, not just in accommodation nights and guests going to attractions, restaurants, clubs and bars, but with the hiring of hundreds of local suppliers, contractors, security, bar staff and more.

“We had a ‘we did it’ feeling when we sold the last ticket more than two weeks before the event. It’s been an extremely tough year or so for a lot of people in the industry so to be able to bring a festival of this magnitude to the Gold Coast is absolutely amazing,” he said.

Major Events chief executive Jan McCormack said festival was the first of its kind in Australia and would be an “incredible” addition to the city’s 2021 events calendar.

“It will be such a sensational event, and not just for young people,” she said.

“We’ve been working with promoters for months to get an incredible mix of diverse events for the Gold Coast, and Inverted will attract crowds from Brisbane and the Sunshine Coast who will undoubtedly spend the weekend here.”

Mrs McCormack said the festival kicked off the city’s event season ahead of the Blues on Broadbeach, Cooly Rocks On, Groundwater Country Music Festival and Guns N Roses in November.

“The Gold Coast is ready to go and we’ve been working on about 70 events, either directly or indirectly, to get all our venues and festivals ready to roll for 2021 — it’s going to be crazy busy year but we’re back in business.”

The city has also pinched the Queensland All Schools touch football tournament from Brisbane, with the annual event coming to Runaway Bay in 2021-2023.

During the launch of Inverted Festival at Coolangatta on Wednesday morning, Gold Coast FMX star Harry Bink and Kram from Spiderbait gave locals a taste of what to expect, with Bink backflipping his motorbike while the musician played the drums.

World champion BMX star and founder of Level Up Skateboard in Currumbin Kyle Baldock said he was stoked to get involved in the Australian-first show.

“There’s no place like home and it’s epic to have an event on the Gold Coast where young BMX hopefuls can see some of the best in the world do their thing,” he said.

With six gold medals under his belt, Baldock said he was working on building up the BMX scene for kids across the city.

Managing director of TEG Van Egmond and event co-promoter Christo Van Egmond said he was certain visitors from across the state and the country would pack out Metricon.

“There’s so much pent up demand with people wanting to get out and attend big festivals, and Spiderbait will appeal to some dads, with kids bound to get a kick out of the tricks that’ll be on display,” he said.

Mr Van Egmond hopes the event will become an annual fixture on the Gold Coast but he’s planning to take the festival format to venues across Australia during the end of 2021.
