Born in Wooloongabba, Brisbane to Constantine and Helen Potanin, Con attended Churchie and University of Queensland Medical School on academic scholarships - the youngest ever medical student at the time of his admission. Later specialising in the new discipline of Cardiology in the late 1960s Con travelled to England and then the USA to conduct research before setting up private practice in Nashville, Tennessee in 1970 - the second cardiologist in the state by just a few months. His practice became the preeminent cardiology lab in Tennessee in the ‘70s, ‘80s and ‘90s before he pioneered Mind Body Preventative Medicine in conjunction with Harvard University in the late ‘90s prior to his retirement. Con and his family returned to Australia where he enjoyed time at Currumbin, the playground of his childhood, and his beloved cattle farm at Stanthorpe. Con later remarried to Carol Anne and spent his final years in Gordon, Tasmania where there was peace and quiet, cooler weather, nourishing rains and endless classical music turned up loud.
A talented cardiologist, a loving father and husband, a man of remarkable intelligence and sharp wit, enlightened and philosophical, always friends with the most remarkable characters, Con Potanin made a lasting deep impact on so many lives around the world. Con is survived by his wife Carol Anne, his children Anastasia, Fletcher and Robyn-Ann and his eight grandchildren.
