HOONS have turned the Gold Coast cane lands into a dumping ground and authorities are powerless to stop them.

Police said land near Skopps Road, Jacobs Well, had become a hooning hotspot, a dumping ground and a haven for experimenting with explosives.

The Rocky Point Canegrowers Association president Richard Skopp, who has land near one of the prime dumping spots, said hoons were leaving behind flaming cars and tonnes of rubbish every week.

“They come here because there is no one around and the roads are only really used by trucks during the day,” he said.

Police are aware of a new hooning spot out at Skopps Road, Jacobs Well/Norwell vicinity that has popped up in the past couple of weeks. Residents have reported being woken up to the sound of vehicles hooning and persons causing damage nearby.

“Its not fair because we have to clean up the rubbish – and there is a lot of it.

“They also light cars on fire – presumably because they are stolen – and we have to get them to the road for council.

“Its getting really annoying because it creates a lot of work for everyone here.

“Unfortunately, it’s not something that can be stopped because the area is really open.”

Mr Skopp confirmed there were multiple dumping grounds in the canelands.

“Residents have reported to being woken up to the sound of vehicles hooning and persons causing damage nearby.

“Some damage is being caused by igniting gas cylinders within old appliances which causes minor explosions.

“This area is very close to sugar cane fields and police hold concerns for the property and life that could be at stake if these offences continue.”
