Hong Kong Airlines increases its flights to the Gold Coast for Chinese New Year

THE Gold Coast Airport is about to get really busy, with up to 10,000 extra people flying into the city this month for one special event. Hint: It’s not the Commonwealth Games.

THE NUMBER of flights between the Gold Coast and Hong Kong have been increased as airport bosses prepare for a massive influx of Chinese visitors.

Hong Kong Airlines has doubled its direct services to the Glitter Strip. Ahead of Chinese New Year.

The five extra services will be added to the existing five weekly flights as 10,000 passengers are expected to flood through the entry gates.

The number of arrives is up 3.8 per cent on 2017 numbers.

GCA Chief Operating Officer Marion Charlton said the additional passengers would receive a warm welcome.

Strong demand for the current services have prompted Hong Kong Airlines to increase their capacity over this period, which demonstrates the airline’s ongoing confidence and commitment to our region,” Ms Charlton said.

“Current passenger forecasts for Chinese groups show a 3.8 per cent increase to 9,634 on last year’s Chinese New Year period.

“We are seeing nearly 80 per cent of the Chinese group travellers originating from Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou and Zhejiang.

“We are looking forward to celebrating yet another Chinese New Year in 2018, followed by what will be an extremely busy first half of the year.”
