IT’S been a while but the Gold Coast is set to cop a decent set of storms today.

Residents have woke to a dreary morning with cloudy skies, light winds and spitting rain, a mere preview of what’s in store over the next 12 hours.

Up to 50mm of rain is expected to fall across the region with heavier spates during isolated thunderstorms, while winds travelling north westerly are expected to reach 30km/h.

The Gold Coast Hinterland will endure the brunt of mother nature with wild winds and thrashing rainfall later this afternoon and into the evening.

“An upper trough is moving over southern parts of Queensland and there’s a nice big cloud which will generate patchy rain and isolated thunderstorms for today,” Bureau of Meteorology meteorologist Lauren Pattie said.

“That’s expected to build through the day, with thunder, lightning and heavier rainfall later on.

“It will also be quite windy.”

However due to westerly winds the surf isn’t expected to pick up until the weekend.

“As the system moves off into the coral sea the surf might pick up,” Ms Pattie said.
