Gold Coast’s Ultimate Boxing Day Shopping Guide

Retailers are anticipating the biggest shopping crush of the year for Boxing Day. Here’s your bumper guide to the best sales, trading hours and Boxing Day movies.

Holiday opening hours of major Aussie retailers

RETAILERS are anticipating the biggest shopping crush of the year for Boxing Day but joining the state’s top health official to emphasise maintaining social distancing.

Queenslanders are expected to splurge $467 million on Boxing Day, according to the National Retail Association with typical bustling crowds expected from opening.

Pacific Fair super mall general manager Shaine Beveridge said Boxing Day was one of their biggest trading annual days – and extra traffic controllers, security, cleaning, customer service personnel as well as new COVID Safe Crew were on deck to ensure our shoppers adhered to distancing.

FULL DIGITAL ACCESS: JUST $5 A MONTH FOR THE FIRST THREE MONTHS

“We hope everyone remains proactive with their own social distancing and take note of retailer’s restrictions and physical queuing outside of store,” he said.

Queensland’s Chief Health Officer Dr Jeanette Young said Queenslanders should not be complacent and be “extra COVID-safe” this festive season, especially after the Sydney Avalon COVID-19 cluster outbreak which prompted the return of Tweed-Coolangatta border blockades.

The Queensland government advises when at shopping malls, customers should keep 1.5 metres away from others and allow one person per two square metres.

National Retail Association spokeswoman Dominique Lamb said: “The day is set to cap off a very successful festive season, with consumer spending at a 10-year high.

“From December 17 to 24, Queenslanders spent more than $2.8 billion, typically at brick-and-mortar stores. There has been a surge in gift-giving this year as many families have been separated during the COVID-19 pandemic.

“Consumers are feeling more and more confident to go to brick-and-mortar stores and snag a bargain and retailers are gearing up to get stock out this Boxing Day.”

The Strand Coolangatta spokeswoman Rosalyn Politylo said the border closure had been disappointing heading into Christmas but centre retailers were hopeful holiday-makers, already settled into the seaside town, would spend big on Boxing Day.

“The centre is still busy and we hope it stays this way, but it’s hard to know how it’s going to play out,” she said.

Self-described experienced Boxing Day shopper Erica Ogden said those heading to malls like Pacific Fair needed to be prepared and get in quick if they wanted to secure the best Boxing Day bargains.

“Be sure to plan your trip and arrive early to get the best park or catch public transport and do your research before hitting the shops,” she said.

“I’m looking forward to shopping fashion and beauty – Pacific Fair has some really big savings.”

This consumer surge is on the back of city tourism businesses battling to cope with a sharp drop in customers as coronavirus decimated the Gold Coast’s world-class visitor industry.

This year, the city’s tourism sector lost more than $4 billion in revenue.

Despite thousands expected to pack major city shopping centres, southern Gold Coast retailers are waiting with bated breath after a devastating and hasty hard border closure with Greater Sydney came into force on Tuesday.

Travellers from Sydney, the Central Coast, Illawarra-Shoalhaven, and Nepean Blue Mountains have been blocked out of the Sunshine State due to COVID-19 cases in the Northern Beaches.

The latest border closure is expected to cost the local economy millions of dollars with fears it would be the final nail for some businesses.

Greater Sydney visitors inject around $225 million into the city’s economy each year.

Christmas Eve marked 100 days since Queensland recorded a case of community transmission.
