THE chances of Gold Coast developing an ocean pool remain up in the air but it hasn't stopped Bulletin readers from igniting the debate.
As reported in February the plan for a series of ocean pools off the Gold Coast appears dead in the water.
Councillors at a transport committee meeting unanimously backed an officer’s report which found the project had the potential to cost $100 million.
The committee’s recommendation will go full council where Mayor Tom Tate, who will vote, also intends to oppose the ambitious tourism venture.
Readers, though, have been quick to pile in on the debate.
"I’d rather see some beautiful lagoon pools closer to the population centres that are not near the beach, like robina, Coomera, etc. Make the whole city have facilities for the people not just facilities at the beach suburbs," David wrote.
"The Southport parklands model should be rolled out in these other areas. The Southport pool is wonderful. Also a wet and wild type wave pool in those areas would rock!"
Scott added: "Ocean pools are brilliant and would be great for the Gold Coast as often the beaches are rough for swimming. In Sydney the pools are amazing, and Newcastle brilliant too. Poor Gold Coast for missing out."
Harry is all for the project.
"I love ocean pools and have swam in many in NSW as a child, sure they didn't cost too much to build."
One reader, who went by the name "Me" added: "Why does everything have to be for TOURISTS?!! Can we please install some facilities for the enjoyment of locals? We are the ones who pay after all. Pools at Surfers or Broadbeach is a bizarre idea."
Ben, however, took the conversation in a different direction.
"I am all for one or two ocean pools. If designed and built correctly. The oceanway can not go through Palm Beach South due to the Seawall being on a lot of private properties. And as for the Light Rail... Well what a complete disaster and waste of billions of dollars... Light rail is a huge fail."
