TOURISM bosses have launched a campaign to draw interstate holiday-makers to the city and encourage Gold Coasters to explore their own backyard.
The $3.5 million pre-summer promotion is the second iteration of Destination Gold Coast’s (DGC) Come Back and Play campaign, which first launched in June and aims to further springboard the COVID-19 economic recovery.
Destination Gold Coast Chairman Paul Donovan said he hoped high-spending local and interstate families were enticed to turn their holiday dreams into a reality, indulge and help revive the $6 billion tourism economy.
“As restrictions are further relaxed and travel confidence continues to grow, we are investing responsibly in markets that we can dial-up or down to ensure maximum benefit for every tourism dollar spent,” he said.
“We know many people will be looking to reconnect with family, friends and loved ones after what has been an incredibly challenging year.”
According to Destination Gold Coast’s Australian Travel Survey, around 1.2 families visited the Coast in 2019 and their favourite activities were the going to the beach, relaxing by the pool or at a hotel or resort, and visiting wildlife attractions.
Before the latest outbreak in NSW, Premier Palaszczuk slated November 1 for the reopening of the Queensland border, providing the southern state had not recorded any community transmission over a 28-day period
The Premier said she was on “high alert” after NSW recorded three new cases of community transmission on Wednesday, and seven cases in hotel quarantine on Thursday.
Mr Donovan said another delay would further damage an already battered economy, particularly for the city’s strong accommodation and small business sector.
Stunning images of Gold Coast beaches, themeparks and natural attractions are at the heart of the eight-week Come Back and Play advertising campaign, which will be rolled out throughout Brisbane, regional Queensland, ACT, South Australia and New South Wales.
Gold Coast Mayor Tom Tate said the Gold Coast had never been so ready to welcome visitors to the city.
“I’m sure when the rest of Australia sees this campaign, they will be lining up to come and enjoy the nation’s favourite holiday destination,” Mayor Tate said.
“We are open for business and as the country continues to open up, we hope our tourism operators enjoy a bumper summer.”
Accor Pacific chief executive officer Simon McGrath agreed and hoped the campaign would offer a much-needed boost for tourism businesses and operators.
In conjunction with the campaign, 138 accommodation, tour and attraction deals are now on offer until December 20, including, cheap rates at 23 Accor Coast hotels.
