A beloved Gold Coast entertainer famous for impersonating Johnny Depp’s Captain Jack Sparrow is fighting for life after a freak accident left him with a devastating brain injury.
Known for his impersonation of Pirates of the Caribbean movie franchise character, entertainer Brady Mayer fell down a flight of stairs in January in Eastern Europe.
Mr Mayer, who has famously hosted Mayor Tom Tate and his councillors for drinks at the old Galley restaurant and bar in Coomera, and devoted countless hours to making sick kids smile with the Starlight Foundation, had been living overseas since moving there to marry his wife Anna in 2021.
He suffered a traumatic brain injury and required emergency skull surgery which left him in a medically induced coma for two weeks.
His brother Trent said the family were devastated when they heard the news.
“It was shocking to hear the extent of what happened,” Trent said.
“It was heartbreaking, and we struggled with what to do and how were going to get through it. We were so far away and not being able to see or talk to him – when he was in the coma we weren’t even sure he was going to wake up.”
Now conscious and having undergone more surgery last week to insert a titanium skull – his family are now desperate to bring Mr Mayer back home to the Gold Coast for specialist treatment where he requires ongoing physical and cognitive rehabilitation.
Brother Trent said the family were doing everything they could just to get him back to Australia.
“We’re doing everything we can to get Brady back home where he can heal surrounded by loved ones,” he said.
“He’s brought so much laughter and joy to others, now we’re asking the community to help give him a second chance.”
The family have launched a campaign via MyCause to get Brady home.
“We’ve exhausted our savings for rehabilitation and treatment,” Trent said.
“We managed to get some money together to get mum over, she’s flying home tomorrow as she was only able to get a three week visa. She’s been with him day in day out massaging his hands... we just want him home.”
His devastating injuries include memory loss and use of his right side, but with costly constant rehabilitation, Trent said he was showing signs of improvement.
“He did tell me he was feeling like Captain Jack was coming back,” Trent said.
“We’ve got his costume boxed and ready for whenever that happens.”
