The Gold Coast’s sweltering weekend ended with a bang on Sunday, with storms sweeping in over the city.
Temperatures soared into the mid 30s on Sunday, reaching as high as 35 degrees in Coomera as a massive heatwave continued across most of the state.
The warm, humid weather stuck around for most of Sunday with storms beginning to move through the Coast at around 7pm.
Bureau of Meteorology senior meteorologist Angus Hines said more storms could be on the way.
“Severe storms can bring areas of heavy rain that potentially leads to flash flooding along with some strong to damaging wind gusts” he said.
“Now it’s not a guarantee that we’ll see that, but there’s a chance we could finish the day with that after our warm, humid Sunday.”
Mr Hines said the potential storms will knock temperatures down by a few degrees as we kick off the new week.
Temperatures across the Gold Coast are set to drop to the high 20s moving into Monday.
“The heatwave will start to dissipate from Monday with humidity coming down one or two points as well, so not quite as warm and sticky,” Mr Hines said.
Further showers and the chance of another thunderstorm late morning and afternoon on Monday are expected with similar conditions on Tuesday and Wednesday.
The second half of the week is expected to bring dryer conditions.
The sunny conditions saw a flood of people into the city’s theme parks and beaches.
Surf Life Saving Queensland supervisor Nathan Fife said beaches were packed at the weekend – but conditions were “a little tricky”.
“There’s a lot of deep holes at the moment with a big gutter so there’s a lot of water moving through,” he said.
Mr Fife said Gold Coast lifeguards were being “kept on their toes” as the gutter spans along the city’s open beaches from Southport to Burleigh.
“We want to make sure people stay between those red and yellow flags and for people to be aware of knowing their own depth, keeping on their feet, stay in close and listen to the lifesavers,” he said.
Village Roadshow Theme Parks chief operating officer (COO) Bikash Randhawa said the company’s parks had kicked off the silly season with a sell-out crowd.
“We have kickstarted the festive season with our first sold out White Christmas event held at Movie World last night,” he said.
“It received incredible feedback from the families who attended with remaining events selling out fast.”
Mr Randhawa said Village Roadshow Theme Parks, which include Warner Bros. Movie World, Sea World and Wet’n’Wild, were expected to experience a “strong school holiday” period across all parks.
